Fendalton was first subdivided in 1852, with sections of an acre each. The large properties came down in stages — most of the Helmore estate in 1913, Clifford Avenue in 1936, the grounds of Daresbury in 1955, Desmond Street in the 1960s. West of the city centre, the suburb now holds 1,761 dwellings across a patchwork of generous sections, with the Avon running past Mona Vale.
Why does the Avon matter to a Fendalton floor?
Because it marks where the ground gave way. The Press reported in March 2011 that liquefaction affected pockets of Fendalton, Strowan and Merivale, especially the streets around the Avon River and its tributaries, and that dozens of properties were red-stickered as a result. Being west of Hagley Park did not mean being untouched.
Two terms get run together constantly. A red sticker was a building-safety placard put on a structure; the residential red zone was a land-zoning and Crown buyout decision. No land in Fendalton was red zoned. Mapping supports the newspaper account: 97 confirmed liquefaction features after February 2011 and 33 after September 2010, the heaviest count of the western suburbs. Technical category sampling returns TC2 and TC3 and no TC1, though categories were assigned property by property and describe future vulnerability rather than past damage. The visible losses were buildings — 101 Fendalton Road placarded and demolished, and Mona Vale Homestead closed after considerable damage.
Acre sections, long lawns and what comes indoors
With a median age of 45.2 and 24.2 percent of residents aged 65 or over, much of the work here is in houses lived in for decades.
