On 30 September 1964, The Press reported that a 145-acre housing subdivision planned by the Ministry of Works housing division would give Hoon Hay 570 sections. The streets were named in 1968. Sixty years on, 71 percent of households here own their home or hold it in a family trust, and plenty have been on the same floor for decades. That changes what a carpet clean is for.
Which earthquake did the damage in Hoon Hay?
The first one, which surprises most people. Peer-reviewed work by Cubrinovski and colleagues found that in Hoon Hay and Halswell, more extensive liquefaction occurred during the September 2010 Darfield earthquake than in February 2011 — the reverse of the eastern pattern, because that epicentre lay west.
No land in Hoon Hay was red zoned, and no verified evidence exists of major silt or flooding specific to the suburb. The land records show a category mix: sampling across Hoon Hay returns TC2 and TC3, and no TC1. Those categories were assigned property by property rather than to the suburb, and they describe possible land damage in a future significant earthquake — not a verdict on your house. Practically, it means getting water fully out of an underlay matters here.
Long-held homes at the foot of the hills
