Bishopdale was drawn up before it was lived in. Waimairi County’s first District Planning Scheme, in 1959, set aside large areas here for new housing and specified a shopping centre with them — a centre the City Council still cites as an example of the planned type, built by the Ministry of Works in the 1960s. The schools followed: Bishopdale in 1957, Isleworth in 1962 and Breens Intermediate in 1976.
